Let’s talk about that unmotivated, heavy feeling you’ve been carrying around.
You know the one.
You sit down to edit photos, and instead of feeling inspired, it’s like your creativity packed its bags and left without a word.
Those passion projects you’ve been excited about? They’re still sitting there, collecting dust.
And what about those deadlines you’ve been juggling?
Remember that project that’s been on your plate for the past month?
Why does it feel like it’s taking twice as long to finish as it should?
The world calls it burnout.
But here’s my take:
Burnout isn’t just about overworking yourself. It’s about working in the wrong way.
As photographers and creators, we thrive on vision.
We’re meant to chase those ideas that spark something inside us.
But when you’re stuck doing work that doesn’t excite you or isn’t aligned with where you want to go, that creative fire starts to dim.
If all you’re doing is pushing through client work, chasing deadlines, and losing sight of why you started in the first place, burnout is inevitable.
Creativity needs room to breathe.
It needs space to wander, explore, and dream.
1. Fun. When was the last time you took photos just for fun? No deadlines, no pressure. Just you, your camera, and an idea that you can’t stop thinking about.
2. Limits. Not every project is your project. It’s okay to say no. You need to make room for work that fuels you, not drains you [but I get it, bills need to be paid].
3. Rest. Creativity doesn’t thrive on endless hours fuelled by caffeine and endless nights grinding. It’s born in those moments when you take a step back and let your mind wander.
4. Look into the Past. When you’re feeling stuck, look back at what made you fall in love with photography in the first place. That fire is still there, you just need to rekindle it.
Here’s a 3 step reset plan to get you back on track:
Burnout doesn’t mean you’re weak.
It’s a sign that something needs to change.
It’s your creativity calling out that it’s time for a new approach.
You’ve got the spark.
You’ve got the work ethic.
Now, give yourself the space to thrive.
Take care of yourself, because the world needs that creative genius inside you.
You’ve got this
