You can set goals.
You can make a checklist.
But at the end of the day, it’s your system that defines you.
When people start something new, they’re often told to start small.
And maybe you think, “That’s just a trick to get me to do more.”
But here’s the truth:
Taking one photo doesn’t make you a photographer.
Doing one push up doesn’t make you fit.
But it casts a vote
A vote for the kind of person you want to become.
If you take a photo every day, you’re voting for the identity of a photographer.
If you edit one image a day, you’re reinforcing the habit of improving your craft.
And after three, four, or six months, something shifts.
You show up in small ways, but those small actions compound.
Suddenly, you’ve crossed this invisible line and photography isn’t just something you do, it’s who you are.
"Success is the product of daily habits, not once-in-a-lifetime transformations." ~ James Clear
So, what’s the point of taking one photo a day?
It’s about proving to yourself, every single day, that you’re committed to your art.
That you’re building the skills, the eye, and the discipline to make photography a natural part of your life.
But how do we get there?
We’re often told to set big goals, to think bigger, aim higher, and push harder.
And sure, setting a goal is easy. As a photographer, I could say, “I want to make $100,000 selling my products,” or “I’ll shoot in two new locations this week.”
But, that took me three seconds to decide.
The harder part?
Building the habits and systems that actually get you there.
Goals give you direction, but systems create progress.
Think of it this way:
Goals are for people who want to win once. Systems are for people who want to keep winning.
If you want to grow consistently, you need ha
bits and routines that move you forward, day after day, shoot after shoot.
Ask yourself:
Maybe you just need patience. Maybe you need to adjust your approach.
Either way, your habits define your future.
We’re obsessed with measuring where we are
How much money we’ve made, how many followers or views we have, or how many photo shoots we’ve booked.
But that’s just a snapshot in time.
What matters more is where you’re headed.
If your system is solid, if you’re consistently improving, learning, and refining your craft
Then time is all you need.
So instead of comparing numbers and positions, shift your focus to the path you’re on.
That’s where real progress happens.
